An Eulerian approach to transport and diffusion on evolving implicit surfaces
نویسندگان
چکیده
In this article we define a level set method for a scalar conservation law with a diffusive flux on an evolving hypersurface Γ (t) contained in a domain Ω ⊂ Rn+1. The partial differential equation is solved on all level set surfaces of a prescribed time dependent function Φ whose zero level set is Γ (t). The key idea lies in formulating an appropriate weak form of the conservation law with respect to time and space. A major advantage of this approach is that it avoids the numerical evaluation of curvature. The resulting equation is then solved in one dimension higher but can be solved on a fixed grid. In particular we formulate an Eulerian transport and diffusion equation on evolving implicit surfaces. Using Eulerian surface gradients to define weak forms of elliptic operators naturally generates weak formulations of elliptic and parabolic equations. The finite elementmethod is applied to the weak form of the conservation equation yielding an Eulerian Evolving Surface Finite ElementMethod. The computation of the mass and element stiffness matrices, depending only on the gradient of the level set function, are simple and straightforward. Numerical experiments are described which indicate the power of the method. We describe how this framework may be employed in applications. Communicated by M. Rumpf. G. An Eulerian level set method for partial differential equations on evolving surfaces
In this article we define an Eulerian level set method for a partial differential equation on an evolving hypersurface Γ (t) contained in a domain Ω ⊂ R. The key idea is based on formulating the partial differential equations on all level set surfaces of a prescribed time dependent function Φ whose zero level set is Γ (t). The resulting equation is then solved in one dimension higher but can be...
متن کاملDynamic Fracture Analysis Using an Uncoupled Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian Finite Element Formulation
This paper deals with the implementation of an efficient Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) formulation for the three dimensional finite element modeling of mode I self-similar dynamic fracture process. Contrary to the remeshing technique, the presented algorithm can continuously advance the crack with the one mesh topology. The uncoupled approach is employed to treat the equations. So, each t...
متن کاملImplicit-Explicit Timestepping with Finite Element Approximation of Reaction-Diffusion Systems on Evolving Domains
We present and analyze an implicit–explicit timestepping procedure with finite element spatial approximation for semilinear reaction–diffusion systems on evolving domains arising from biological models, such as Schnakenberg’s (1979). We employ a Lagrangian formulation of the model equations which permits the error analysis for parabolic equations on a fixed domain but introduces technical diffi...
متن کاملNumerical Framework for Pattern-forming Models on Evolving-in-time Surfaces
In this article we describe a numerical framework for a system of coupled reaction-diffusion equations on an evolving-in-time hypersurface Γ. The proposed framework combines the level set methodology for the implicit description of the time dependent Γ, the Eulerian finite element formulation for the numerical treatment of partial differential equations and the flux-corrected transport scheme f...
متن کاملA Convergent Finite Volume Scheme for Diffusion on Evolving Surfaces
A finite volume scheme for transport and diffusion problems on evolving hypersurfaces is discussed. The underlying motion is assumed to be described by a fixed, not necessarily normal, velocity field. The ingredients of the numerical method are an approximation of the family of surfaces by a family of interpolating simplicial meshes, where grid vertices move on motion trajectories, a consistent...
